What to Expect During Breast Reduction Recovery
While every patient heals differently, understanding the typical recovery process can help you feel more comfortable as you plan your surgery. Here’s the general recovery timeline for most women.
- Initial recovery period: Early recovery lasts between one and two weeks, depending on how your body heals. Bruising, soreness, and swelling are normal during this time. You could have some sensory changes, like sensations of tightness or numbness, during early recovery.
- First few days: You’ll wear a compression bra home after surgery. It supports your breasts, helps prevent swelling, and protects the incisions. Some patients may also have drainage tubes to help remove excess fluid. You’ll need to empty these drains regularly. We instruct you on this process before you leave our surgical center.
- Showering: Dr. Craft gives you specific guidance for showering post-surgery. Generally, patients can shower after 72 hours.
- Medications: Dr. Craft prescribes pain medications or over-the-counter medications to help manage discomfort. Additionally, he prescribes antibiotics that help prevent infection.
As you finish the earlier part of your recovery, you’ll typically continue to wear a compression bra for at least several weeks.
