Spending on cosmetic treatments reaches pre-recession levels
Last year Americans invested more money in cosmetic treatments than at any time since the recession started in 2008, reports the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Michael Edwards, MD, the President-Elect of ASAPS, says he thinks the number of Americans consulting with board-certified plastic surgeons to improve their overall appearance will continue to grow.
“A significant increase in the number of both cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures suggests that people are once again investing in their appearance and perhaps have more disposable income to do so,” Edwards said. “Given the state of the economy and the competitiveness of the job market, we expect to see the numbers for anti-aging procedures continue to increase.”
Liposuction was the most popular surgical procedure last year, with 363,912 recorded procedures. That number rose 16.3 percent between 2012 and 2013. Perfect for patients who are at or close to their optimal weight, liposuction sculpts and contours the body, removing persistent fatty deposits that are difficult to target through diet and exercise alone.
The second-most common surgical treatment was breast augmentation, with 313,327 operations. You might consider getting a breast augmentation in Miami if you would like larger or more evenly sized breasts, or if you are seeking to restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss.
Butt augmentations showed the greatest year-to-year growth, with a 58 percent increase over 2012. If you want a more sensual profile and better defined curves, a Brazilian butt lift could be for you. Christopher Craft, MD, has performed many such procedures, taking a patient’s own fat from another area of the body and moving it to the buttocks. No synthetic or unnatural products are used.
