Questions to Ask Your Surgeon about Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty, aka eyelid surgery, is a popular procedure for people seeking a younger, refreshed facial appearance. If you are interested in rejuvenating your face with blepharoplasty, top plastic surgeon Christopher M. Craft recommends asking the following questions of your potential surgeon during the consultation phase:
What Is the Difference Between Upper or Lower Blepharoplasty?
The term blepharoplasty can refer to either of two separate surgeries: upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery. These procedures are remarkably different from one another. Upper blepharoplasty addresses a drooping upper eyelid by removing some of the excess skin and fat above the eye that pushes the eyelid downward. Lower blepharoplasty focuses on the skin just beneath the eyes and can move the fat to fill in the hollow, dark “bags” that leave you looking more tired.
Am I a Candidate for Blepharoplasty?
During a consultation, your surgeon will examine your eyes to verify whether blepharoplasty would be useful. People who have droopy eyelids and/or excess fat around their eyelids and want to get rid of the signs of aging for a rejuvenated and more “alert” appearance are usually strong candidates for blepharoplasty. The ideal candidates are non-smokers (smoking can interfere in the healing process) who are in good overall health.
Would Another Procedure Better Address the Problems Around My Eyes?
Blepharoplasty is a great surgery for reducing signs of aging, but that does not mean it is the procedure best suited to treat your unique face. For example, your surgeon may suggest brow lift as that can help to reduce the sag of your upper eyelid while simultaneously addressing the wrinkles and lines on the forehead and around the corners of the eyes.
Your surgeon may also discuss injectable options with you to address the lines and hollows around the eyes instead. Given the temporary nature of Botox and dermal fillers, however, blepharoplasty may still be your preferred option.
Can You Show Me Before-and-After Photos?
It is perfectly understandable that you would want to see evidence of the quality of your surgeon’s work before undergoing an elective surgery. Seeing these photos can help you to set realistic expectations about what a procedure like blepharoplasty can achieve, and provide you with comfort in knowing that the surgeon has already made impressive improvements to other patients’ eyelids.
