Plastic surgery now more common for seniors
The conventional wisdom about plastic surgery used to be simple – those who were middle-aged would have work done in order to take years off of their appearance. While this is certainly the case, new numbers indicate that more and more senior citizens are splurging on cosmetic procedures as they hit retirement. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, those over the age of 55 made up 25 percent of all plastic surgeries performed in 2013.
The number of those in this older demographic having cosmetic surgery also rose a full four percent from 2012 to 2013, comprising of nearly four million people in the last year alone. These procedures run the gamut, from simple facial fillers to more invasive and involved work. As we have noted elsewhere on this blog, seniors do not face any additional risk when it comes to the complications that can sometimes follow cosmetic work. As technology has advanced, so has the work that can be done.
As for the 55 and older group, the most popular procedures to have done in 2013 included facelifts, forehead lifts, ear reshaping, hair transplants and pectoral implants. Nose reshaping was the most popular procedure among all ages last year. So why do so many older people opt for surgery later in life? According to Dr. Larry Fan, a plastic surgeon based in San Francisco, it is because the retirees now have the time to focus on themselves, as well as the disposable income available.
