Good looks affect men’s earning potential even more than women’s
Numerous studies have shown that attractive people tend to make more money, but did you know that the affect is even greater for men? David Hamermesh, an economics professor at the Royal Holloway University of London, recently spoke at South Dakota State University, discussing his extensive research on the subject. Hamermesh cited one study that found that the most attractive men earned an average of 12 to 14 percent more than their least attractive male peers, the SDSU Collegian reports.
According to Hamermesh’s own calculations, if the typical attractive person makes just 3 to 4 percent more than their less good-looking counterpart, that will add up to $230,000 on average over the course of an entire career. He tells the Wall Street Journal that the issue is complex.
“Better-looking workers bring in more for the employers, just as a more intelligent worker will,” Hamermesh tells the source. “Paying them more is still a form of discrimination, but their attractiveness also tends to raise their productivity. That’s what makes it so difficult. I would argue that this is discrimination. But others would argue that it’s simply an indulgence of people’s tastes and preferences.”
Many men mistakenly think that their appearance doesn’t matter very much in terms of their personal and professional success, especially when compared to women. However, Hamermesh’s research proves that assumption wrong. If anything, it is more important that men are attractive when it comes to their earning potential.
