When it comes to plastic surgery, if the price sounds too good to be true, you should run in the other direction. Unfortunately, far too many dishonest people are offering to perform operations when they have neither the qualifications nor the experience to do so. Before authorities discovered the center and shut it down, dozens of people were left permanently disfigured, some in chronic pain. In another reminder of the importance of choosing your plastic surgeon with care, a New York physician is now facing accusations that she flagrantly violated health and safety standards. According to a former receptionist, the doctor gave patients used sutures, failed to properly clean her surgical equipment and even flushed fat from liposuction procedures down the toilet. 

“[The physician] was only sterilizing surgical instruments in the autoclave (a device used to sterilize equipment) once a month,” say the court documents. “In addition, [she] directed her staff to use a toothbrush with the blue cleansing solution (which was changed every 30 days) in a metal tray to clean the instruments after each use.”

The civil lawsuit also alleged that the doctor simply left the room during three different liposuction operations, asking a nurse to complete the surgery. 

If these accusations are true, they are disturbing in the extreme. Regardless, they also serve as an important reminder to do your homework before getting cosmetic surgery, and only use a reputable, board certified plastic surgeon like Christopher Craft, M.D.
