Botox vs. Fillers: What’s the Difference?

Botox & dermal fillers in MiamiBotox or dermal fillers for wrinkles? Both are injectable, nonsurgical procedures, but the right choice depends on the treatment area and patient goals. Renowned board-certified Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Craft explains the difference between Botox and fillers and where to use them.

Botox

Botox is short for botulinum toxin, a deadly bacteria. Don’t worry — the minute amount used for treating wrinkles has few side effects and a track record going back decades.

Botox works by temporarily freezing the muscles into which it is injected. It does so by blocking nerve signals, inhibiting muscle movement. The result is a reduction or even removal of wrinkles in the area.

The effects of Botox may last three months or more initially. Once a patient receives Botox on a regular schedule, the results last even longer.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers, including those marketed under the brand names Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse, use plumping action to fill out underlying wrinkles.

Juvederm and Restylane products consist of hyaluronic acid (HA). This natural compound boosts volume while improving skin hydration. The effects of HA injections may last between six months and a year.

Radiesse differs in that it is made of calcium microspheres. It works by stimulating collagen production. While collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, the amount produced diminishes with aging. Not only does Radiesse restore volume, it also encourages the body to accelerate collagen production.

Radiesse’s effects can last longer than other dermal fillers. Some patients may only need additional treatment every two years.

Wrinkle Types

There are two types of wrinkles: static and dynamic. The former are permanent wrinkles, visible at all times. The latter are wrinkles apparent during facial movements. Dermal fillers are the treatment of choice for static wrinkles, while Botox is generally used for the dynamic variety.

Wrinkle treatment often involves injecting Botox and dermal fillers in the appropriate areas. This combination can give you the most youthful and aesthetically pleasing results.

Side Effects

Botox and dermal fillers are both safe when injected by a doctor. Some patients may experience minor side effects, such as swelling, reddening or bruising at the injection site. Call the doctor at once if developing droopy eyelids, breathing problems or vision issues after a Botox injection. While rare, such symptoms may occur.

Neither type of procedure requires downtime.
