The number of men seeking plastic surgery has risen in recent years
When it comes to plastic surgery, one of the most popular misconceptions that exists is that women are the ones who opt to go under the knife most often. According to new data from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS), the number of men who are having surgical procedures rose an astounding 106 percent between 1997 and 2012.
The top procedures that men were seeking out include hair restoration and rhinoplasty. The organization says that there is a slight difference to the type of procedures that men and women have done on themselves. While women generally go for more subtle fine-tuning, men are interested in completely revamping their bodies, from getting a firm jaw to creating six pack abs.
ASAPS says that there are generally two reasons that men will decide to have some cosmetic work done. The first is fairly standard — they want to look and feel better about themselves. But aside from low self-esteem regarding physical appearance, men will also have plastic surgery in order to advance their careers. A more competitive job market means looking your best is critical for success.
Depending on what stage of life the men are in, they will seek out different types of surgeries. Younger men will look to improve their physical appearance in relatively minor ways, such as having work done on their noses or cheek bones. But middle aged men will want to totally contour their bodies in a new way, whether that means having fat removed or hair replaced.
