Is social media a driving factor behind cosmetic surgery?
These days, it seems as if everyone is living their lives on the internet. Social media websites such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr allow us to stay in constant contact with the world around us, for better and for worse. The rise of the selfie, in which people take pictures of themselves and post it to the internet for all to see, has had a noticeable impact on the plastic surgery industry. According to experts in the field, more people are opting to have work done to look better in their photos.
Florida-based surgeon Dr. Harold Bafitis has noticed this upward trend, as he says he now has more and more clients coming into his office to discuss their options in order to look better in their selfies. Bafitis stressed that this is a relatively recent phenomenon, though he did note that it is happening more now than in years, and even months, past.
“We’ve seen patients come forward, sharing with us that the way they look in Facetime, Skyping and selfies is not what they want to look like in the real world,” Bafitis told local NBC News affiliate WPTV. Dr. Bafitis also noted that the changes often aren’t too extreme, sometimes they want a light facelift, but the difference to them in their pictures and self-esteem is “massive”.
