Many older Americans are investing in surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures to help them kick off retirement looking and feeling the best that they have in years. A new MarketWatch article highlights the popularity of plastic surgery treatments among Americans 55 and older. That demographic accounted for one in four cosmetic procedures last year, an increase of 4 percent over 2012.

Mary Lou Ray, a 60-something Virginia woman, told the Wall Street Journal that she was thrilled after getting a facelift and other cosmetic procedures.

“My life led up to this,” Ray told the source. “I had been divorced for 13 years, my children were grown, and with the death of my mother — not to be unkind — I was finally free of criticism about things like dyeing my hair.”

Ray says she suspects many of her friends wish they could also have high-quality work done. 

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the most popular treatments for those 55 years and older in 2013 were: 

1. Facelift
2. Forehead lift
3. Ear reshaping
4. Hair transplants
5. Pectoral implants

The procedure with the highest year-over-year growth in this age group was the Brazilian butt augmentation, with 41 percent mor procedures in 2013 compared to 2012.
