Want to look sexier? Try wearing red
If you have a big date planned and really want to turn up the sex appeal, you might consider pulling out your favorite red dress. One study from researchers at the University of Rochester found that men are more attracted to women who are wearing red.
“It’s only recently that psychologists and researchers in other disciplines have been looking closely and systematically at the relationship between color and behavior,” professor of psychology Andrew Elliot told the university’s news service. “Much is known about color physics and color physiology, but very little about color psychology. It’s fascinating to find that something as ubiquitous as color can be having an effect on our behavior without our awareness.”
Elliot and his co-researcher Daniela Niesta showed male participants pictures of women wearing various colors and asked them to rate their attractiveness. Each man was also told to imagine he had $100 in his wallet and decide how much he would be willing to spend on a date with each woman. The women wearing red were rated as significantly more desirable and were taken on more expensive hypothetical dates.
Elliot and Niesta believe this color preference may have its roots in the animal kingdom. They observe that some the skin of some female primates reddens significantly when they are at their most fertile, signaling to their male counterparts that they are ready to mate.
Of course, wearing red can only do so much to heighten your sex appeal. You also have to look and feel beautiful!
