Surgeon General cracking down on tanning salons
The United States Surgeon General is issuing a stern warning to Americans who spend too much time in the sun or in tanning salons, saying that they are hurting their skin and endangering their lives. Boris Lushniak, who is a dermatologist, says that skin cancer rates are on the rise in the U.S., qualifying as “a major public health problem that requires immediate action,” according to The Washington Post.
In a recent report, Lushniak said that each year our country sees 63,000 new cases of melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. Approximately 9,000 people die of the disease annually and many of the victims are teens and young adults. The report marks the first time that the Surgeon General has addressed the nation on the issue of sun protection.
USA Today reports that Lushniak wants all states to ban the use of tanning salons for minors and/or implement some kind of industry regulations. The Food and Drug Administration recently announced that it will start requiring the makers of tanning beds and lamps to state usage risks on product labels, much like the warning statements on cigarette packaging.
Of course, here in sunny Florida, it’s difficult to avoid the sun entirely. However, using sunscreen, wearing sunglasses and hats and avoiding tanning salons can all go a long way toward protecting your skin.
