A disturbing new medical report underscores the importance of seeking liposuction and other cosmetic procedures only from a board certified, licensed plastic surgeon. According to The JAMA Internal Medicine, two deadly outbreaks of streptococcal among liposuction patients in 2012 likely occurred because of poor infection control practices at an unaccredited “medical spa.” One outbreak reportedly occurred in Maryland and the other in Pennsylvania.

“Although there were not that many patients involved compared to other outbreaks, the fact that all 13 patients were previously healthy with many having to be hospitalized or even dying makes this a very serious outbreak,” Dr. Daniel J. Morgan told Reuters news service. Morgan is part of the Department of Public Health and Epidemiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Morgan added that other liposuction patients have also died at medical spas because of accidental lidocaine overdoses. 

At the Maryland facility, the on-site doctor was found to be carrying the strep infection, and he admitted to failing to wear a mask during pre-operative and post-operative care. The investigators also found that the medical team had been inadequately sterilizing their surgical tools and operating equipment.

So-called medical spas attract patients with their relatively low prices, but they are not always subject to adequate governmental oversight. Remember that just because a licensed doctor or nurse works at a facility does not necessarily mean it is safe.
