Breast lift procedures have increased 70 percent since 2000
On March 31, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) published a press release announcing that breast lift procedures have increased 70 percent since 2000, outpacing breast implants two-to-one. While breast implants are still the most commonly performed plastic surgery among women, the source reports that ASPS member plastic surgeons performed upwards of 90,000 breast lift surgeries in 2013.
Breast lifts are reportedly most popular for women between the ages of 30 and 54. These procedures work to elevate, rejuvenate and reshape breasts that have begun to sag and droop as a result of aging, significant changes in weight, pregnancy, breast-feeding and genetic laxity of breast tissue.
“The ideal candidate for a breast lift is a woman who has a good amount of breast tissue left, who doesn’t necessarily want to have implants,” said ASPS President Robert Murphy, Jr. in a press statement. “Many women aren’t sure if they are a candidate for this type of surgery, but a simple pencil test can tell them if they are.”
Dr. Murphy explains that to perform a pencil test, women should simply place a pencil underneath one of their breasts. If the breast tissue is able to hold the pencil in place, this indicates that the breast is sagging and means that the woman could be a good candidate for a breast lift.
